HomeTown Radio isn't new -- a Jackson FM station served Amador and Calaveras communities for nearly 30 years. In 2003, the FM station was purchased by a media company for broadcast to Central Valley audiences. Immediately, there was huge demand from listeners and advertisers to replace the lost radio service in the foothill region -- the need for local radio programming including daily news, information and emergency services was clear.
When KNGT went off the air in January 2003, a huge void was left within the community by the loss of our local radio station.
Jim Guidi and his wife Teresa realized that the community had suffered a grave loss by losing the emergency broadcasting relevant to citizens in Amador and Calaveras Counties. They pursued a unique solution to bring local radio back to Amador and Calaveras Counties.
HomeTown Radio is broadcast on the SCA sub-carrier of KOSL-FM. KOSL is the former KNGT Jackson, CA and is now owned and operated by Univision Radio, providing programming to the Hispanic communities of the Sacramento/San Joaquin valleys. While reception of our signal requires a radio equipped with the SCA band, in the first two months on the air upwards of 5,000 units were sold, representing a market share for HomeTown Radio of nearly 40%. HomeTown Radio is also broadcast on Volcano Vision channel 12 in Amador County. Car radio adapters are also now available. Although these numbers may be unheard of in larger markets, they show the impact HomeTown Radio has made on the local market.
By utilizing the sub-carrier, Amador and Calaveras Counties regained access to 24 hour a day, 7 days a week coverage of local news including broadcasts of fires and other emergencies. Another plus is that our coverage has been expanded by recent improvements at the tower site. This allows us to reach listeners who were not able to listen to KNGT in the past.
HomeTown Radio's format is oldies, predominately from the 60's and 70's. HomeTown Radio is also the only local source of immediate news of both the World and The Gold Country. Programming such as Funeral Notices and Pet Patrol, Community Calendar, School lunch menus and our popular Best Buys program round out the day.
HomeTown Radio is proud to be "the Community's" Radio Station.
Jim Guidi, long-time operations manager and on-air personality for the former FM station, reopened the Jackson station broadcasting on the SCA band. Today HomeTown Radio carries on as the only source of immediate local and world news for this vibrant Gold Country region. |
