Please note the suggested donation for seniors (over 60) has gone up to $4.
Our "Thanksgiving Extravaganza" will be on November 26th. Worth $4 (or even the $6.50 for non-seniors!) The Center and the meals program will be closed both Thanksgiving and the day after.
Another important thing: Medicare Part D (the prescription plans) open enrollment starts on November 15th. HICAP (The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program) Counselors will be taking appointment to help people select new plans if their drugs have changed. UNFORTUNATELY, there are a number of unscrupulous insurance and scammers at work during this time. Seniors have until December 31st to make a decision. THEY DO NOT HAVE TO PAY ANYONE TO HELP THEM DECIDE. The HICAP program offers free help by trained volunteers! Not everyone will need or want to change but some people will need assistance in deciding.
Debby Shally, Program Manager for HICAP for Area 12 Agency on Aging, will be speaking to the Amador County Commission on Aging on Nov. 19th at 10 a.m. and will be explaining the changes in Part D. The public is welcome.
SENIORS PLEASE remember to NEVER give their social security or Medicare number out over the phone. Never give in to high pressure tactics. NO legitimate insurance (or investment) offers need to be signed immediately. If something sounds "too good to be true", it probably is! Check out any "extraordinary" offers.
DO NOT give information about your insurance over the phone to anyone who calls saying they are "confirming" you coverage. There are several telephone scams going on right now that involve not only credit cards but also the "Part D" open enrollment.
CALL HICAP at 800.434.0222 (the main office for this area) and make an appointment to see a counselor here at the Senior Center. |
